There are several phases an applicant must complete and pass before
they can be considered for employment. This process assists the department
in making sure we select the most qualified people to become part
of our police department.
Once you have properly completed and turned in your application,
the first phase will begin. You must pass each phase in order to proceed
to the next phase.
Phase I. Pre-Employment Test
This test is required by the state and will be administered at the
Covington Police Department located at 1143 Oak Street, Covington,
GA.
Phase II. Physical Testing Assessment
This test consists of a 1.5 mile run, push ups and sit ups You must
pass all phases of this test according to set requirements for your
age group.
Phase III. Oral Interview
This test will be conducted at the Covington Police Department (1143
Oak Street, Covington, Georgia). You will be required to respond
to a series of questions before a panel. You must rate at least
an 80.
Phase IV. Examination for Police Academy
This is an academy entrance exam. It is required by the Georgia
Peace Officers Standards and Training Council (Ga. P.O.S.T.) before
acceptance into a police academy.
Phase V. Background Investigation
A complete background will be conducted on all applicants who have
successfully passed the first five phases. This investigation will
consist of an interview with neighbors, preview of employers, references,
etc.
Phase VI. Criminal and Driver History
If your criminal / diver history meet the requirements set by the
state and our department, you will be notified as to date and time
to continue to the next phase.
Phase VII. Voice Stress Analysis
All applicants that enter this phase will be given a voice stress analysis.
It is considerred part of the background investigation phase.
Phase VIII. Interview with the Chief of Police
A conditional job offer is made at this time contingent upon successful completion
of phases 9 and 10. Dress appropriately.
Phase IX. Physical/ Drug Screen
A complete physical test will be conducted by the City of Covington's
physician.
Phase X. Psychological
The psychological test will be administered by the Covington Police
Department for evaluation by Psychological Professionals.
