Patrol Division
Function and Duties
The Uniform Patrol Division is the single largest division in the department, and is made up of 34 sworn officers. Officers assigned to the Patrol Division are responsible for accomplishing a wide variety of tasks. They respond to calls for service from the public which they serve for reports of thefts, burglaries, suspicious activity, situations involving domestic violence, motor vehicle accidents, missing persons, and various other criminal violations.
While on duty, officers are involved actively in random neighborhood patrols and in situations where there is a greater need for police, more intensive patrols, specifically targeting areas that have indicated patterns of criminal activity over time. At the direction of their Watch Commander, they actively enforce the "rules of the road" by utilizing traffic control devices such as RADAR and LIDAR (or Laser), with a common goal of encouraging voluntary compliance of the speed limits posted within the city.
The V.I.P.E.R. Unit (Variable Intensive Patrol and Emergency Response) was formed in 1998 in an effort to target areas in our community that were experiencing problems such as: drug activity, burglaries/thefts, traffic issues and special events. Their efforts were rewarded nationally by wininng the Weber Seavy Award in 2002 sponsored by IACP (International Association of Chiefs of Police) & Motorola. This award was presented to the CPD for promoting a standard of excellence that exemplifies law enforcement’s contribution and dedication to the quality of life in local communitites.
